The Russo Brothers are at it again, as Joe and Anthony’s AGBO production company will be adapting Mohsin Hamid’s bestselling novel Exit West into a Neflix film according to Deadline. The film will star Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Venom), who will also serve as an executive producer, and be directed by Yann Demange. Helping AGBO will be Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions banner and the aforementioned Netflix as Exit West‘s streaming carrier. Production is set to commence this spring.
The Russos acquired the rights to Exit West over three years ago in August 2017, but were determined to finish contractual obligations with Marvel/Disney before they could move forward with the film. Around this time, The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum was initially signed on to direct, but would later depart the project for other opportunities. Exit West was ranked among the 2017 Man Booker Prize finalists, which Higher Ground viewed as an excellent source to develop into a film.
Producing the film will be a in-house staff member of AGBO, Mike Larocca, who will work alongside Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan of Higher Ground. Exit West was previously penned by Jessica Goldberg, but the Obamas and the Russo Brothers announced that a new writer will take the reins of the script.
