Netflix has just acquired Mosul, an action war film written and directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan. The Russo brothers, known for directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, produced the film.
Mosul tells the story of a group of Iraqi men in the Ninevah SWAT team, a renegade police unit who waged guerilla war operations against ISIS when the terrorist group took their homes, families and city. The movie was inspired by a 2017 article written in The New Yorker by Luke Mogelson titled, ‘The Desperate Battle to Destroy ISIS.” The New Yorker Studios is also helping to produce the film, which is set to come out on Netflix sometime this November.
The upcoming war film will star The Hurt Locker’s Suhail Dabbach, Extraction actor Adam Bessa and Murder on the Orient Express star Hayat Kamille. Is’Haq Elias and Waleed Elgadi also star.
Carnahan previously wrote the zombie film World War Z in 2013, and the 2016 historical drama Deepwater Horizon. The Russo brothers also produced the 2019 film 21 Bridges, which was written by Carnahan. Mosul will mark Carnahan’s first time in the director’s seat.
The film was originally acquired by 101 Studio for distribution in 2019, but those plans fell through.
