Hellboy 3 is currently just a pipe dream for director Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak) as he continues to shop around the project. The director has told star Ron Perlman (Pacific Rim) the general plot for the the third entry and the star revealed it in an interview on an Empire podcast.
According to Perlman, the third and final entry in the Hellboy trilogy will include the title character being the beast of the Apocalypse who has to take down civilization.
Holy shit, he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilisation. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it.
The movie would also address the cliffhanger from the second film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, that Hellboy’s girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair, In Their Skin) is pregnant with twins. The two characters would reportedly be to sides of the same coin, representing the each of the parents personalities.
I’ll tell you this. The two twins: one would look like the mom and one would look like the dad. And one of them was going to be completely fucking corrupt, the other one angelic. Which one was which? Only Guillermo would make the fucked-up-looking one be the angel. So then that adds to the saga.
Of course, all of this is still hypothetical as a movie has yet to find a studio to back it. At a panel discussion at 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, Del Toro said the movie won’t likely come together unless his other upcoming films, Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim 2, are successful. The director also said that this would likely be more expensive than the series previous two entries requiring about $120 million for production.
Until then, we’ll only be able to dream about the hypothetical sequel.
