Not to be outdone by their Marvel rivals, Warner Bros. presented an exclusive trailer for their upcoming Suicide Squad at tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. Perhaps taking the criticism of the dreariness of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to heart, the latest trailer of the DC Comics’ continuum draws heavily on its humor, all of which is pointedly, and perhaps appropriately, pitch black. Stars Will Smith (who picked up the MTV Generation Award this year), Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne and The Joker himself, Jared Leto came out to introduce the debut of the trailer.
Fury filmmaker David Ayer both wrote and directed the latest in the DC cinematic canon. In the film, a covert government agency (embodied by Viola Davis’ Amanda Walker) enlists a group of the baddest in the world on dangerous black ops missions in the return for clemency for their nefarious crimes. The collection of supervillains include Deadshot (Smith), Harley Quinn (Robbie), Enchantress (Delevingne), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and, of course, The Joker (Leto, in his first big-screen outing since winning the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club).
The rocking trailer enhances what has already been an early fan favorite among comic book fans and cinephiles. We shall get to judge for ourselves once Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 5th.
