Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will not have a sequel attached. Rather, it will be a stand alone film, as has been the thinking seemingly from the start. While Rogue One is projected to bring in $120 to $150 million dollars just in its opening weekend and is reportedly showing brisk early returns in pre-sale, but no matter how much dough the film brings Disney, it will not get a sequel. For Disney as well as Lucasfilm, both of whom are known for having perhaps too many sequels, it’s hard to believe.
However, in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said there will be no Rogue Two. Rogue One, was always made to be an independent film. The film, which was directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and stars Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler) and Forest Whitaker (Arrival), revolves around a rebellion plan to steal plans from the Death Star, is actually a prequel to A New Hope. Edwards cheekily commented, “that sequel will be directed by George Lucas.”
Follow-ups or not, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is one of the few remaining hotly anticipated titles of 2016. The film opens wide on December 16th.
