The godfather of Marvel, Robert Downey Jr., has teased his work with the third installment of the Sherlock Holmes franchise. Under film distributor Warner Bros., the untitled Sherlock Holmes 3 is set to debut in 2020. The two previous installations of the franchise, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, have accumulated over $1 billion at the box office.
Just last week, Downey tweeted a GIF of his character in Sherlock Holmes with the caption “Practicing my Sherlock face,” which caused fans worldwide to channel their inner film fanatic after a seven year hiatus since the second Sherlock Holmes film. Although Guy Ritchie directed the two previous installments of the franchise, there is no guarantee that he will be back for the third. Many critics believe it is unlikely for Ritchie to return to the franchise since his current project is Disney’s live-action Aladdin and his next project is set to be Toff Guys, and both these films would delay the new Sherlock Holmes movie to start production until late 2019, which would make it nearly impossible to reach the 2020 debut goal.
However, Downey’s schedule is much more vacant than Ritchie’s, since the most he could be doing at the moment is small reshoots for the upcoming Avengers 4 movie and wrapping up The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. Additionally, Jude Law has already completed his part in the highly anticipated Captain Marvel movie coming to theaters spring of 2019. With both leads carrying a somewhat light schedule, it is very likely that many Sherlock fans will soon be graced with the long-awaited Holmes and Watson reunion after a long seven years of hiatus.
