After making his (possible?) last appearance as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, many are curious to what Robert Downey Jr. will do in his post-Marvel career. Now, as of next January, Robert Downey Jr. will go from playing billionaire superhero scientist Tony Stark to a different kind of scientist: Doctor Dolittle. Dolittle is the newest adaptation featuring the character of Doctor Dolittle from Universal Pictures. The film’s first trailer was recently released, showcasing an idea of what the new film has to offer.
Dolittle is based on the second book featuring the character, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle. This adaptation will not be in the same vein as Eddie Murphy films from the late 90s, which were more comedic in tone and took place in modern times. Instead, the film is striving to be more like the original books with its adventurous feel and period piece setting, which was attempted in the 1967 musical adaptation with Rex Harrison.
The trailer showcases this more fantastical adventure with Doctor Dolittle not only talking to his animal partners, but also traveling all around the world. This all leads into a very exciting and magical adventure with Robert Downey Jr. portraying a very well recognizable character. Hopefully this new adaptation of Doctor Dolittle will serve Robert Downey Jr. well now that he is not daunting the Iron Man suit anymore. Or at least for the time being.
Dolittle is set for release on January 17th 2020. Watch the full trailer below:
