After months of rumors, heavy metal musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie has confirmed that his next film will be an adaptation of the 60’s sitcom The Munsters. On Monday, Zombie wrote in an Instagram post: “Attention Boils and Ghouls! The rumors are true! My next film project will be the one I’ve been chasing for 20 years! THE MUNSTERS! Stay tuned for exciting details as things progress!”
Zombie has been very outspoken for his love of the classic series, he appeared alongside star Butch Patrick for the Blu-ray commentary track of the film Munsters Go Home, he even named his hit song “Dragula” after the Munster family’s car.
The film is being produced by 1440 Entertainment, Universal Studios home entertainment division. It was also rumored by Bloody Disgusting back in April that the film could be released on the NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock and in theaters concurrently, similar to what Warner Bros. has been doing with their new films on HBO Max, but no official word on that is known yet.
Murphy’s Multiverse broke news that the film is reportedly casting Zombie regulars Jeff Daniel Phillips and Zombie’s wife Sheri Moon as Herman and Lily Munster, respectively. Dan Roebuck, Jorge Garcia and Richard Brake are also said to be cast in the film as well as horror legend Casandra “Elvira” Peterson.
The original series of The Munsters is currently streaming on Peacock. It ran for two seasons between 1964 and 1966, but has since gained cult and general classic status.
Rob Zombie is best known for his music as well as extreme horror films such as House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, Lords of Salem, and 3 From Hell.
