Sexual assault and harassment allegations continue to surface against actor Kevin Spacey. Netflix has already dropped the two-time Oscar-winning actor from the acclaimed series House of Cards, and Spacey will no longer be the recipient of the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award.
Well, in a surprising turn of events, director Ridley Scott (Gladiator), according to Deadline, decided to remove Spacey from his upcoming film, All the Money in the World. With the film already finished and release date of December 22, Scott intends to begin reshoots immediately, replacing Spacey with Canadian thespian Christopher Plummer (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus). Plummer will assume Spacey’s former role of Jean Paul Getty, a greedy oil tycoon who refuses to pay a ransom to free his kidnapped grandson, John Paul Getty III.
Spacey’s role, although not the lead, is integral to the film’s plot. Co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams have all agreed to be available for the emergency reshoots. Scott’s decision to replace Spacey follows the AFI Festival’s removal of the film from the prestigious closing night slot.
It remains to be seen how the final film will play out; however, Scott deserves to be commended for sticking to his guns and refusing to allow his film to be sunk by the terrible actions of one man.
Regardless, the repercussions that Spacey (as well as Harvey Weinstein) must now face are indicative of a sea change in Hollywood. Assault survivors will hopefully no longer be afraid to speak out against their assailants, and the perpetrators of these awful deeds will no longer be able to hurt others with impunity.
