Oscar nominated auteur and Austin film royalty Richard Linklater (Boyhood) will unveil his latest film- the 1980s-set coming-of-age comedy Everybody Wants Some– as the opening night selection of the 2016 South By Southwest Film Festival. Next year will mark the 23rd edition of the film festival. Linklater both wrote and directed the film Paramount Pictures is set to open theatrically on April 15, 2016.
Everybody Wants Some is an ensemble comedy set around a group of college baseball players as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. A premise that seems akin to Linklater’s 1993 breakout film Dazed and Confused. The ensemble is stacked with a roster of rising young stars including Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures), Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door), Glenn Powell (Scream Queens), Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf), Blake Jenner (Glee) and Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street). Linklater also produced the film alongside Megan Ellison and her AnnaPurna Pictures label. Janet Pierson, head of SXSW Film said of the selection:
We are so thrilled to premiere Richard’s latest work, which is really funny, instantly quotable, and filled will great new talent. Audiences are going to love this paean to competition and coming of age in the 80s.
This is Linklater’s first film since his Oscar-winning 2014 feature Boyhood, perhaps the ultimate American coming-of-age film as it was filmed over the course of twelve years utilizing the same group of actors. Boyhood was one of the most critically features of 2014 and won numerous critics prizes, the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture and received six Academy Award nominations- winning one for Patricia Arquette‘s performance. Linklater has taken each of his last four films- Boyhood, Before Midnight, Bernie and Me and Orson Welles– to SXSW.
Linklater previously directed the Before-trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight) and noteworthy prior films including Bernie (2012), School of Life (2003), Waking Life (2001) and Dazed and Confused (1993). Linklater also serves as the director of the Austin Film Society, which he founded in 1985. Linklater appears likely to next helm Where’d You Bernadette possibly with Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett (Carol) to star.
Everybody Wants Some will open SXWS on March 11. 2016.
