‘Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé’ Takes The Lead In Weekend Box Office With $24 Million Domestically

A new concert film from Beyoncé, Renaissance, opens this weekend and is set on track for a good weekend. The film opens alongside a surprise hit for many, Godzilla Minus One, with the two movies giving life to the statistically slow post-Thanksgiving box office.

Renaissance is looking to claim the top spot at the box office this weekend, taking up the mantle of the biggest early-December opening across two decades. It took home $11.5 million on Friday, including $5 million in early previews.

Currently, Beyoncé’s concert film is on track for an opening weekend of $21-$24 million. As Hollywood Reporter points out, Renaissance distributor AMC is erring on the cautious side, estimating a $20 million total gross for the weekend.

The holdover title Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes is taking up second, but third place is taken by the Japanese picture Godzilla Minus One. Coming as the 33rd Godzilla film from parent company Toho, the film looks to take home $9 to $10 million this weekend, with an audience skewing mostly male.

Staying around from Thanksgiving weekend, both Wish and Napoleon are looking at a sluggish time, duking it out for 4th place, along with Trolls Band Together.

All 3 are tracking to make $7 million this weekend, meaning a 63% drop for Wish, and a steeper 66% for Napoleon.

Also opening this weekend is Angel Studio’s The Shift, to a small $4.5 million that doesn’t quite stack up to Beyoncé or Godzilla. Angel Studios saw massive success at the box office earlier this year with Sound Of Freedom.
