Positioning itself well for the fall awards season, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge will be released on November 4th. Deadline reports the WWII action-drama-bio faith-based film is testing through the roof. The Oscar-winning director (Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ) last helmed in 2006 (Apocalypto, nominated for a BAFTA) and may have another Oscar contender in hand.
Desmond T. Doss, who served during World War II in the Battle of Okinawa, was a U.S. Army medic who refused to fire a gun. He became the first conscientious objector in American history to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving so many lives. Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) stars as Doss. Vince Vaughn (TV’s True Detective) plays a sergeant whose job is to whip soldiers into shape. Sam Worthington (Avatar) plays the officer in charge of the unit. The director’s son, Milo Gibson, will play a character named Lucky Ford. Hugo Weaving (The Hobbit franchise), Luke Bracey (The November Man), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) and Rachel Griffiths (Mammal) are also in the cast.
The script was penned by Robert Schenkkan, Andrew Knight and Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace. Bill Mechanic, David Permut, Brian Oliver, Tyler Thompson, Bruce Davey, William D. Johnson and Paul Currie are producing. James M. Vernon is executive producing. The film was co-financed by Cross Creek and Demarest Films. Lionsgate/Summit is distributing domestically, Icon Film Distribution in Australia, and international sales are being handled by IM Global.
The war film will be doing its own battle at the box office; the much-anticipated Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer Doctor Strange from Marvel Studios will also be released on November 4th.
