An awards-qualifying release date of December 28th has been set for writer-director Jim Jarmusch’s indie drama Paterson starring Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), according to Variety. Amazon Studios will release the film in partnership with Bleecker Street. Joshua Astrachan and Carter Logan are producing.
The film premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival to strong reviews for finding beauty in normalcy and for being both pointedly ordinary and paradoxically transcendent. Paterson refers to both a place in New Jersey as well as the name of the protagonist (Driver), a bus driver who also poetically writes of his daily route and the people he encounters. His wife, played by Golshifteh Farahani (Rosewater) is supportive of and inspired by his writing efforts. Also in the cast are Barry Shabaka Henley (TV’s NCIS: New Orleans), Brian McCarthy (Little Sister), Jared Gilman (Elsa & Fred), and William Jackson Harper (True Story).
Amazon Studios, which finances films and distributes them in theaters, also gets streaming rights for its Amazon Prime subscription service. Busy with the release of Nicolas Windin Refn’s The Neon Demon last month and Woody Allen’s Café Society earlier this month, Amazon will be releasing another awards contender, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By the Sea, on November 18th.
