A eerie new horror film is coming to theaters this summer. No, nothing in the Freddy Krueger variety but instead a sequel to the 2006 climate change documentary An Inconvenient Truth, based on former Vice President Al Gore’s PowerPoint presentation and non-fiction best-seller. Cheekily titled An Inconvenient Sequel and timed in a particularly charged political climate that may prove challenging for scientists and climate change experts alike, Gore is at it once again.
Paramount announced, just as An Inconvenient Sequel makes its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, that will documentary will open in wide release on July 28th, just as the summer heat begins to blast. The first feature was a bonafide doc smash back in the summer of 2006, earning nearly $50 million worldwide – domestically it’s currently the 11th highest grossing documentary in history (it was in third place back in its day). The film also won two Academy Awards – for Best Documentary Feature and Melissa Eitheridge’s song of the same name. Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk direct An Inconvenient Sequel and further documents Gore’s post-political career in his fight against climate change.
Gore, in a statement: “Now more than ever we must re-dedicate ourselves to solving the climate crisis, but we have reason to be hopeful; the solutions to the crisis are at hand. I’m deeply honored and grateful that Paramount Pictures and Participant Media have once again taken on the task of bringing the critical story of the climate crisis to the world.”
An Inconvenient Sequel premieres at Sundance on Thursday, January 19th and opens wide on July 28th. The film will square off against Focus Features’ thriller The Coldest City and Sony’s The Dark Tower.
