For the past decade director James Cameron has been promising sequels to his financially successful film Avatar which came out back in 2009. Unfortunately the public will have to wait a bit longer for Avatar 2, because according to Screen Rant the release date for the film has been pushed back even further to December 17th, of 2021.
The official reason for this change is still unknown, but it is possible that Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox might have something to do with this. Right now Disney has so many other major franchises to focus on Avatar is probably not a priority for them.
Despite the setback release dates for four more Avatar sequels have been announced as well. Avatar 3 will be released in 2023, after that Avatar 4 will come out in 2025, and finally Avatar 5 should be out in 2027.
The cast list for Avatar 2 has already been confirmed and includes Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Yeoh, Giovanni Ribisi, David Thewlis, and Oona Chaplin.
While Avatar was extremely financially successful it has not really made a big impact on popular culture. A sequel to Avatar does not sound unreasonable, but perhaps it would be wise if the filmmakers waited until Avatar 2 was in theaters before they started planning for more sequels.
