Regina King has found her second feature film to direct in Bitter Root for Legendary Entertainment. This comes after her feature debut with One Night in Miami, which received Oscar-Nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, and Best Supporting Actor. King received some awards buzz for her direction, but did not end up with an Academy Award Nomination herself.
Bitter Root is described as Blade meets Get Out– a monster movie that touches on real racial issues. Set in 1920s Harlem, New York, a family of monster hunters operate to stop a portal to the netherworld being opened.
The film is an adaptation of an Image Comic of the same name written by Chuck Brown and David F. Walker. The comic is relatively new, the first issue coming out in November of 2018, but it is clear that Legendary is impressed with the project as the film is quickly in development.
There is no scribe for the film as of yet, but both the creators are onboard as executive producers on the project. In addition to the creator, writer-director Ryan Coogler will be a producer for Bitter Root.
As of now, there is no set timeline for the film that is currently in pre-production at Legendary Entertainment.
