It looks like Ava DuVernay‘s already record-breaking Disney film, A Wrinkle in Time, is getting even more star studded with the potential additions of Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon (Wild) and comedienne Mindy Kaling (Inside Out), according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film has already cast Oprah Winfrey (Selma) in a lead role and DuVernay continues to prove that she is making waves for women filmmakers, actors, and the like after she has become the first woman of color to head a film with a budget of $100 million.
DuVernay will be directing the Disney production based on a script by Frozen writer Jennifer Lee. Based on the best-selling children’s novel by Madeleine L’Engle, A Wrinkle in Time follows a young girl as she embarks on an interplanetary journey with her friend and younger brother as they search for her missing father, a scientist. Along the way, they are aided by three guiding women: Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who. Winfrey is playing Mrs. Which while Witherspoon is in negotiations for Mrs. Whatsit, a grandmotherly hobo, and Kaling is looking to play the enigmatic literature-quoting Mrs. Who.
This will be Witherspoon’s return to Disney after 2002’s Sweet Home Alabama and a sort of re-team for Kaling with her last film role being the voice of Disgust in last year’s Inside Out. Witherspoon will be in business with Disney again soon once the live-action Tinker Bell moves into production. Until then, she will be starring in the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies with Nicole Kidman and will voice character in Universal’s Sing. Kaling is now filming the fifth season of her series The Mindy Project for which she writes, produces, and stars. She is also attached to be a part of the 8 women leading the female Oceans Eleven reboot.
A Wrinkle in Time is now in pre-production and is looking to commence filming this November in Los Angeles.
