Another popular female-led comic book character will be making her way back to the silver screen with the power of a big production company. Millennium Media, the production company that has provided us with crazy, over-the-top action flicks including Olympus Has Fallen and its spiritual sequel London Has Fallen, will fully finance a new film adaptation of Red Sonja, a fairly popular comic book hero from the 1970’s, according to Deadline.
Red Sonja is a comic book series that began through Robert E. Howard’s character, who was featured in a story in 1934. It was adapted into mainstream comics by Marvel Comics in the 1970’s by Roy Howard and Barry Windsor Smith and is now distributed by Dynamite Entertainment today.
This will not be the first time that the character Red Sonja has been adapted to film. The first live-action film released in 1985 and featured Brigitte Nielsen as the titular character and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Kalidor, who bared a remarkable design resemblance to one of Schwarzenegger’s other film characters Conan the Barbarian. It will be interesting to see who will be selected to play the titular character and how the new story will be written, considering that it will be an entirely new story and characters from the previous film. No release date nor any filming date has been announced.
