Even with movie theaters opening up in places like New York City, it doesn’t seem like moviegoers are rushing to return to the theatrical experience just yet. Disney’s newest animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon, opened to a seemingly sluggish $8.6 million at the box office. For the pandemic, this isn’t a small number, but compared to the $14.1 million opening of Tom & Jerry last week, Disney’s new film isn’t looking very impressive.
The fact that Raya and the Last Dragon has failed to even crack the $10 million mark shows how uncertain theatrical releases are during the ongoing pandemic. The film earned $26 million globally, with China and Russia making up the largest contributions after the US. Raya is also available to watch for $30 on Disney’s streaming service, Disney+.
Tom & Jerry earned $6.6 million in its second week, pushing its domestic gross to $23 million. The film is also available to stream through HBO Max. The Croods: A New Age has continued to impress with worldwide sales since opening last fall and still holds on to a spot in the top five grossing films at the box office with $780,000 last weekend. In total, the film has earned $157.7 million worldwide.
More markets should be opening up in the coming months with vaccinations increasing and coronavirus rates dropping, but it’s still unclear when we’ll see “normal” box office sales again.
