Ray Stevenson, the Irish actor who starred in projects such as RRR, HBO’s Rome, and the upcoming Star Wars: Ahsoka, passed away on Sunday in Lacco Ameno, Italy, ABC News has confirmed. He was 58 years old. Stevenson passed four days shy of his 59th birthday. No cause of death has been revealed, but sources reported him hospitalized during filming on Ischia Island.
Born in Northern Ireland on May 25, 1964, Stevenson started his career in television acting in the early 1990s through various series and television films. He debuted on the big screen in 1998 in the British comedy-drama film, The Theory of Flight, where he played the role of “Gigolo.”
Stevenson boasted a strong presence and established a career during his extensive time as an actor. Some of his most notable roles include the villainous Governor Scott in RRR, Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome, and Volstagg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
At his death, he was shooting the film Cassino in Ischia, which Frank Ciota is directing. In addition to being in production for this project, Stevenson was involved in multiple projects that have either gone into post-production or are being set up for release. These two projects are 1242: Gateway to the West, directed by Péter Soós, and the Disney+ limited series, Star Wars: Ahsoka, developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.
