With the announcement that Avengers: Infinity War is releasing week earlier than expected (now April 27th), the movie industry is playing musical chairs to get out of its way. You’d think a movie starring a giant gorilla and Dwayne Johnson wouldn’t be afraid of anything, but fear appears to be the primary motivation behind Rampage’s sudden move from April 20th to April 13th.
As stated by Forbes, the move gives Rampage two weeks B.I.W. (Before Infinity War), but also places it week nearer to fellow video-game-friendly film Ready Player One. Steven Spielberg‘s sci-fi opus launches on March 29th. This also means that Warner Bros. is releasing three big gamer movies back-to-back-to-back, with Tomb Raider rappelling into theaters on March 16th.
With the unfortunate stigma still existing that video game movies suck, it’s a risky move to stack the deck like this right before the summer movie season kicks off. Time will tell if the move pays off, but getting a few solid weeks in before the I.W.T.E. (Infinity War Total Eclipse) certainly seems like a wise decision.
Check out the latest trailer for Rampage below, and let’s hope that the latest video game movie scores a critical hit at the box office, because I’m still hoping for an Ice Climbers movie:
