‘Black Panther’ Hits $500 Million Domestic Gross, Breaks More Records

Black Panther continues its box office dominance in its third weekend, banking another $65 million. According to Deadline, that means it passes the $500 million mark, blowing past Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459 million) to become the second-largest earning Marvel Cinematic Universe film. It now sets its sights on the first Avengers movie, which ended its domestic run at $623 million.

This is the third-highest weekend-three haul of all time, only trailing the beginning of a new space trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.2M) and the soon-to-be-sequel-heavy Avatar ($68.5M). Black Panther dropped 40% from last weekend (which sounds high, but actually isn’t), continuing to show that T’Challa’s first solo outing has some seriously impressive legs.

The newcomers were less impressive this weekend. Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow debuted with $17 million, probably enough to cover Lawrence’s paycheck but not enough to ensure that the $69 million film achieves profitability. Bruce Willis-starrer Death Wish failed to justify its existence with a weak $13 million opening.

The Greatest Showman ($164 million) and Jumanji ($393 million) continue to amaze by filling seats months after opening.
