The trio of directors that make up the collective Radio Silence are continuing their hot streak with a planned remake of the 1981 John Carpenter dystopian classic Escape From New York, according to Giant Freakin Robot. The reboot has been in development with 20th Century Studios for years now with Robert Rodriguez originally set to helm before dropping out.
Radio Silence – comprised of Matt Bettinell-Olpin, Chad Villella, and Tyler Gillett – most recently directed Scream, released earlier this year, which went on to gross over $140 million. The team also finished shooting the franchise’s next installment, Scream 6, which comes out next year. They are perhaps best known for their acclaimed 2019 horror flick Ready of Not.
The movie will be produced by Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company. Carpenter has also signed on as executive producer.
In the original, The Cold War turns hot as the Soviet Union and China are engaged in a total war with the Unites States. There is a surge in crime which results in the entire island of Manhattan being converted into a maximum security prison. Air Force One is hijacked and the president is held hostage on the island. Kurt Russell plays Snake, a career criminal hired by the government to rescue the president in exchange for his freedom.
After initial reports of Russell returning to play the iconic one-eyed bank robber, Bloody Disgusting has been reported that he is, indeed, not coming back to act in the reboot.
