March 15 will bring the Hollywood premiere of the new Disney film Snow White. Hollywood premieres tend to bring a lot of press and viewers. However, with controversies surrounding the film and cast the premiere will look a bit different.
Instead of the usual packed red carpet with cameras and interviewers, there will be only photographers and a “house crew” allowed. The film was originally met with backlash from some Snow White fans when Rachel Zegler was cast in the role of the princess because she is Latina. Also upsetting some fans of the original film when Zegler commented that the film was “dated” due to the prince’s stalking of the princess. She also told Variety “[Snow White]’s not going to be saved by the prince. She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
Another controversy for the main actresses, Zegler and Gal Gadot who will portray the Evil Queen, has to do with Palestine and Israel. Zegler has taken to social media and advocated for “Free Palestine.” Gadot, who is Israeli said “Never did I imagine that on the streets of the United States, and different cities around the world, we would see people not condemning Hamas, but celebrating, justifying and cheering on a massacre of Jews” at the Anti-Defamation League’s annual summit.
Trump supporters have also bashed Zegler for a statement on Instagram that read “May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace.” She later apologized.
Peter Dinklage has criticized the movie regarding its depiction of people with dwarfism. On Mark Maron’s podcast, he said “Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback…They (Disney) were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there.” In response, Disney told Good Morning America that they have consulted with people in the dwarfism community and will stray away from the original depiction.
Zegler has spoken out about the criticism the film is facing. She believes it is due to her love of the original film. She added that she is happy to be a part of a project with such passionate fans even if that involves disagreements.
The film is set to hit theaters on March 21.
