It’s a tale of two Rachels. Recently, we reported that Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (currently on screen in Denial) was set to star and produce an adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel Disobedience. The project appears to be moving fairly swiftly as Variety reports Rachel McAdams appears in negotiations to star opposite Weisz. Sebastián Lelio (who made an international splash recently with the acclaimed 2013 film Gloria) is already set to direct the feature from a screenplay penned by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida).
The movie centers around a Ronit (Weisz), a woman who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home following the death of her rabbi father, of whom she had been estranged. Upon returning, Ronit rattles her quiet hometown when rekindling a formerly repressed relationship with her best friend (McAdams) – a woman who just happens to be currently married to her cousin. Ed Guiney (Room), with his Element Pictures shingle, is producing the title with the support of Braven Films and Film 4.
If talks prove furtive, it would mark another prestige-type project in the pipeline for McAdams, who is coming off a strong year that culminated with an Oscar nomination for her work in the Best Picture champ Spotlight. McAdams also recently appeared in Southpaw opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and was considered one of the bright spots of the poorly received second season of HBO’s True Detective last summer. The actress will also make her Marvel debut next month with Doctor Strange. Weisz has appeared in four films so far this year: The Lobster, Complete Unkown, The Light Between Oceans and Denial.
Disobedience is expected to start shooting early next year.
