Quinto Continues Career Expansion as Producer with Victor Quinaz’s ‘Breakup at a Wedding’

Perhaps best known amongst audiences as Spock and American Horror Story’s favorite serial killer with Mommy issues, Dr. Oliver Thredson, Zachary Quinto’s career is slowly expanding into new realms with his latest role as a producer. Quinto’s first production was J.C. Chandor’s Margin Call, which he produced through his company Before the Door. Quinto recently executive-produced Chandor’s second film, All Is Lost, which stars Robert Redford and received stellar reviews at Cannes. Quinto’s latest production is Breakup at a Wedding, a comedy told through the perspective of wedding videographers and directed by Victor Quinaz.

Quinaz’s career thus far has consisted of film shorts which he both directs and writes, most of which can be found on his Funny or Die page and his film website. Many of Quinaz’s shorts are period pieces with contemporary and satirical spin. Viking Wives, for example, centers on wives who are faced with the stresses of viking society and also have a tendency to drop phrases like “I miss your face” and “It’s really nice to have some girl time”- think Lena Dunham’s Girls set circa 800-1000 A.D.  Other shorts  include FOP, a depiction of the French Revolution, and Re:Creation, a modern take on the creation story. One of the gems within Quinaz’s quickly growing collection of shorts is his adaptation of East of Eden, which begins with the line, “Your mother is a dead whore. Accept it,” a crass, yet effective, opening to John Steinbeck’s magnum opus. The shorts have included guest appearances by actors such as Quinto (both he and Quinaz attended Carnegie Mellon), Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley, and Willie Garson of Sex and the City and White Collar fame

Quinaz’s period pieces feature a recurring cast that will stand at the center of Breakup at a Wedding and includes actors such as Victor’s brother, Philip, and co-writer Anna Martemucci. The film will be co-produced alongside Before the Door productions by Anonymous Content (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). During a recent sit-down with Entertainment Weekly, Quinto divulged that Breakup at a Wedding was truly a family affair, calling members of the cast and crew longtime friends, and commented on the movie’s unique narrative structure. Quinto also mentioned that the film has a “tremendous amount of heart,” which, combined with Victor Quinaz’s comedic prowess and the success of Quinto’s past productions, seems to promise a film that will be both innovative and laugh-inducing.
