Los Angeles’ New Beverly Cinema, which is owned by legendary director Quentin Tarantino, is finally set to reopen June 1 after being closed for over year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The theater took to its official twitter page to make the announcement.
“More info coming soon…” reads the post, which is accompanied by a picture of the theater’s marquee that reads, “Re-opening June 1, 2021 because we love showing movies.”
Tarantino purchased the building that housed the historic New Beverly Cinema in 2007 in order to save it from redevelopment. At one point it was a shuttered adult theater, but in 1978, Sherman Torgan turned it into the film haven that it’s known as today. The theater seats 300 and is known mainly for its screenings of Tarantino’s films and double features shown on 35mm film.
“I want the New Beverly to be a bastion for 35mm films,” said Tarantino. “I want it to stand for something. When you see a film on the New Beverly calendar, you don’t have to ask whether it’s going to be shown in DCP or in 35mm. You know it’s playing in 35 because it’s the New Beverly.”
L.A. movie theaters have been slowly reopening at limited capacities as vaccination rates rising. Most recently in the city, theaters have been cleared to hold 50% capacity, but it looks like the New Beverly Cinema is waiting a bit longer so it can open up at full capacity this summer.
