Another piece in Marvel’s plans for their cinematic universe has just been revealed. A film adaptation of one of Marvel’s most intriguing properties, The Eternals, will be going into production this year. According to ComicBook.com, the official start date for production is August 1, 2019, and will begin in Atlanta, Georgia.
Originally created by legendary comic writer and artist Jack Kirby, The Eternals are ancient human-like beings with incredible powers. The Eternals were created when beings known as the Celestials experimented on protohumans. The Celestials also created a race known as the Deviants who are evil and sworn enemies of the Eternals. Technically, both Celestials and Eternals already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starlord’s father Ego, who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, claims to have been a Celestial, and the body of a dead Celestial was seen in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Also, the antagonist, Thanos, is considered a descendant of the Eternals. It is assumed the Deviants will make their cinematic debut in this new movie.
However, this upcoming movie is a prequel set millions of years before the MCU timeline and will be completely focused on characters who are Eternals. Not much is known about the film’s full plot but what is known is that the movie will primarily focus on the characters, Ikaris and Sersi.
The movie’s screenplay was written by writers Matthew and Ryan Firpo. The movie will be directed by Chloe Zhao who is best known for directing The Rider. It is also known that Marvel is planning on producing a prequel movie starring the character Black Widow in the near future.
