Since Daniel Craig announced his retirement from the iconic ‘James Bond’ role, fans of 007 have been questioning who will take on the part next. Although several big names have been thrown around, producer Barbra Broccoli announced at the BAFTAs that the casting process hasn’t even begun.
Broccoli added that there isn’t even a script for the next Bond film, and producers won’t start the casting process until the script is finished.
There have been talks about casting a female or a person of color in the role, similar to Jodie Whittaker on Doctor Who. Idris Elba was a popular pick by audiences but has stressed he’s not interested in the role. The producers also turned him down, stating he was too old for the position. Broccoli emphasized that James Bond is more of a commitment than a singular role, especially considering that Craig played the role for over 15 years.
However, the Bond of the 1960s differs from the Bond of today. In speaking with Variety, Broccoli said: “It’s an evolution. Bond is evolving just as men are evolving. I don’t know who’s evolving at a faster pace.”
Though nothing is set in stone, specific names aren’t out of the running. Popular choices for the role include Jack O’Connell, Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, and Tom Holland.
