The 2015 awards season is about to be in full swing. Monday came the announcement from the Producers Guild of America of their nominations for Best Documentary of 2015. The list of five nominees includes some of the most acclaimed and celebrated documentaries of the year and from some of the leading doc filmmakers currently in the industry. Amy, the international box office and critics hit centered around the tragic life of the late singer Amy Winehouse was among the field- something which may bode well for the films’ Oscar chances.
The documentary branch of the Academy tends to be an unpredictable bunch however- last year, the PGA awarded the Roger Ebert-centered doc Life Itself and that film- while critically acclaimed and commercially viable- couldn’t even land nomination at the Academy Awards. Another acclaimed 2015 documentary nominated by the PGA is Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence, a sequel of sorts to his Oscar nominated 2013 film The Act of Killing which revolved around the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s. Notable absent from the PGA line-up is Where to Invade Next, the festival hit from controversial Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore.
The PGA awards ceremony will be held on January 23, 2016. Even though this prize is given out to producers, actual producer credits were not included with the nominations announcement. The nominees are:
