Steve Bing, famous Hollywood producer, writer, and philatrohopist, has died on Monday afternoon at age 55, per Variety. After a long battle with depression, it is reported that Bing leapt from the top of his apartment in Century City onto the street below.
Bing was a key investor for films such as Robert Zemecki’s ‘The Polar Express’ (2004), and legendary documentary and concert films such as Kevin Macdonald’s Marley (2012) and Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones film, Shine Light (2008). He was also one of the screenwriters for Kangaroo Jack (2003).
On top of this, he was the founder of Shangri-La Entertainment and donated millions of dollars to the Democratic Party and various charitable organizations.
He was well-known for his relationship with actress and model Elizabeth Hurley, with whom he fathered his only son, Damian. Both Damian and Elizabeth shared images and heartfelt messages about Steve on their social medias, with Elizabeth writing that he was a “sweet, kind man,” and that “in the past year we had become close again.”
Bing, the grandson and heir of multi-millionaire Leo S. Bing, started his career in the film industry after dropping out of Stanford and using his wealth to invest into various productions. In 2010, the Los Angeles Business Journal estimated that his net worth was around $590 million.
