Producer Roy Lee, fresh off the success of The LEGO Movie, will produce a live-action adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft. Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft, announced the news in a tweeton Thursday. The news comes with the release of another video game adaptation, Need for Speed, only a month away.

In keeping with the creative theme of LEGO, Minecraft allows players to build anything they want within its virtual world, so long as they can find the materials. Players need to build structures to protect themselves from monsters that come out at night. While the game was published by Mojang in 2011, a beta version was available to players as early as 2009. Whether you’ve heard of it before or not, this could end up being a huge property for Warner Bros. According to Gamespot, the Xbox 360 version of the game hit 10 million copies sold last December, making it the third platform on which the game has crossed that threshold.
Lee will again work with Warner Bros, though unlike The Lego Movie, Minecraft will be done in live action. The film industry has had a hard time adapting video games for the big screen thus far and Minecraft may prove exceptionally difficult since it has no in-game story. On the other hand, The Lego Movie simply told a story about LEGOs and has made almost $300 million worldwide so far. We will find out in the coming years if Lee can replicate that success.
