For 11 years, producer Bill Gerber championed the latest iteration of A Star is Born throughout its production. Now that A Star is Born was released and earned awards, Gerber is moving on to other projects, and appropriately, some of these projects are music related. Deadline Hollywood reported that the producer is working on a documentary about the 1969 music festival, Woodstock.
Gerber’s upcoming documentary is not the first time filmmakers tried to tell the story of Woodstock. In 1970, Michael Wadleigh directed an award-winning documentary about the festival and titled it Woodstock. However, this film noticeably did not have any footage of Neil Young. The movie did however show footage of Young’s then bandmates, David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, performing but the film omits Young. Bill Gerber promised that his documentary will be using footage of Neil Young performing at Woodstock and any other artists left out of previous documentaries will be appearing in this new one. New never -before- seen footage of artists such as Janis Joplin will also be included in this documentary.
The original Woodstock may have happened 50 years ago but it still has memorable significance in popular culture today. According to the Hulu and Netflix documentaries, the creators of the Fyre Festival hoped Fyre would become the Woodstock of this generation but that, of course, resulted in a massive failure. However, despite Gerber’s recent success with the Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga -led Star is Born and the fact that music festivals have become a recent topic of discussion, it will not be easy for the producer to get Warner Brothers studio on board for this documentary. Hopefully, for fans of these musical icons, they will get the chance to see all previously unseen footage of Woodstock.
