Presence, Steven Soderbergh’s ghost movie shot from the ghost’s POV, performed solidly in its domestic box office debut. On the weekend of January 24th, the film made $3.3 million, $1.4M on Friday, $1.2M on Saturday, and a smaller $704k on Sunday. This opening box office doesn’t sound huge, but considering the film’s minuscule estimated budget of $2 million, the film is already on its way to making a decently solid profit.
These box office numbers put Presence at #6 in the domestic box office, with Leigh Whanell’s Wolf Man, which made $3.3 million domestically this past weekend, not far behind. So, while the film didn’t quite make the top 5, it did make it to the top 10 at the domestic box office at #6. Instead, in the domestic top 5, Disney’s Moana 2 at #5 made $4.2 million. At number 4 was Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which made $5.3 million. The comedy One of Them Days was at #3, making $8 million. At #2, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King stood firm at the domestic box office, making $8.6 Million. Finally at #1 was Mel Gibson’s thriller, Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg, which, in its box office opening, made $11.6 million. Other films in the domestic top ten include A24’s The Brutalist at #10, with the Adrien Brody-led American Epic making $2.9 Million, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which at #9 also made $2.9 million, and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown at #8, which $3 million.
Altogether, the domestic Top Ten grossed $101 million, approximately $6 million from the weekend before. January is typically a slow month in terms of box office grosses. So, as we reach the final weekend of the month, it’ll be interesting to see what the domestic box results will be. Regarding new releases, the domestic market can look forward to Dreamworks Animation’s Dog Man, based on the popular Scholastic book series written by Captain Underpants writer Dav Pilkey, and the romance/thriller Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid.
