‘Power Rangers’ Finds Its Red Ranger

“It’s Morphin’ Time!” Dacre Montgomery (TV Movie Family Tree Pilot Trailer) better start practicing that call to action as he has been cast as the Red Ranger in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot.

The Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) film would be the first for Montgomery who has no other films to his name. Playing the Red Ranger could definitely put him on the map, especially since Saban Entertainment likely hopes to use the film as a launch pad to reinvigorate the franchise with young viewers.

It’s unclear whether this will be a continuation of the existing franchise or a hard reboot. During the franchise heyday, the two theatrical releases, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie were used to start new versions of the heroes for the TV series. There haven’t been any announcements as to if Montgomery will be playing Jason, the original Red Ranger, or a new character entirely.

Montgomery is the second to be cast for the project after Naomi Scott (The Martian) joined the film as the Pink Ranger. The movie will be made under a partnership between Lionsgate Films and Saban Entertainment. The franchise recently garnered interest from fans after gritty, violent short released online that took place long after the series. This new film is likely to be more youth-oriented, akin to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.

Power Rangers is still very much in pre-production. The film is set to release January 13, 2017. We’ll have more on the film as the as the cast grows and the project moves closer to production.

Tyler Lyon: When Tyler isn't thinking about the lack of a Canadian presence in D2: The Mighty Ducks, whether Princess Leia can now be considered a Disney Princess or discovering 8-bit classics on his 3DS, he's cheering on the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, and Hawkeyes.
