After the resounding success of Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman on Netflix, it looks like the iconic director’s next film is headed to streaming again. This time, he’s working with Apple, who has agreed to fund and distribute Scorsese’s new film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
The film, based on the book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, will star Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, according to Deadline. Paramount will still distribute the film in theaters, a move that will likely increase its Oscar odds given the Academy’s hesitation to embrace streaming services. The film will tell the true story of the murders of members of an oil-rich Osage tribe in Oklahoma.
Apple has been aggressive in its attempt to enter ‘the Streaming Wars’, referring to the increase instreaming content as studios continue to invest apps like Netflix or Hulu, or create their own like Peacock and HBO Max. Apple previously launched their new service Apple TV, bringing in big names like Stephen Spielberg, M. Night Shyamalan, and Chris Evans on various projects. The company had previously picked up Tom Hank’s war drama Greyhound for distribution, after the film was left without a release date due to the coronavirus pandemic.
