Video game movies don’t have the best track record. It seems like Hollywood just cannot find away to properly adapt a video game into a feature film. However according to IGN, J.J. Abrams is working with Warner Brothers to adapt the popular puzzle platforming game, Portal, into a movie.
Portal and its sequel Portal 2 are puzzle platforming games created by Valve, which also created the popular Half-Life games. Both the Half-Life games and the Portal games take place in the same universe. The plot of the Portal games follows a woman named Chell, who works as a tester at the infamous Aperture Science corporation. Chell’s job is to test the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, which of course creates portals. During the testing Chell is monitored and taunted by the hilariously sarcastic computer named GLaDOS. In the second game Chell encounters even more unique characters like Wheatley and his fellow defective personality cores. She also finds recordings of Apertures’ eccentric founder Cave Johnson. The second game also introduces the multiplayer campaign, in which the players play as the two robots Atlas and P-Body.
As of right now not much is known about this upcoming Portal movie. It is unknown if this movie will follow Chell’s story, Atlas and P-Body’s story, or be about something completely different. The Portal games were well received by critics and fans, so the expectations for this movie are certainly going to be high.
