After a plethora of sequels this past decade, many are excited to see that Pixar’s first two films of the 2020s are original properties. The first being a fantasy film with a modern times edge, Onward is set for release in the spring. The second is the newest project from Up director, Pete Doctor. Not too much has been revealed in regards to any major details regarding Soul until today. At D23, Pixar revealed the cast, the first set of images for the upcoming film, and more plot details for the animated film.
The film follows a Jazz teacher who has a literal out of body experience as he ends up being in the spirit world and comes across another spirit who happens to hate Earth. The film is said to explore what makes a person unique, diving into what makes people have dreams and passions of their own. Jaime Foxx has taken the role as the lead along with Tina Fey, Daveed Diggs, Questlove, and Phylicia Rashad joining the cast as well. A few photos have been released for the film, including Foxx’s lead character both in human and spirit form, another spirit character, and art work of what the world of Soul will look like.
Being a film about Jazz, Soul will be putting great emphasis on music. The Social Network composers, Trent Renzor and Atticus Ross will be composing the film’s score. It is unknown,however,i the film will feature original songs in the vein of something like Pixar’s Coco. Dana Murray, who directed the short film Lou from Pixar in 2017 will also be producing the film alongside Pete Doctor.
Fans of Pixar works are intrigued by Soul for various reasons. The concept being more existential similar to Inside Out, the fact that this is the first Pixar film to have a black character as the lead, and being the next big Pixar film from beloved director Pete Doctor, many are excited for another potentially great original Pixar movie. If this film and Onward are anything like the other non-sequel Pixar movies from the past decade, it is clear that Pixar has a great future in stored for them.
Soul is set for release on June 19th, 2020.
