Pixar has just announced that in 2023, a film called Elemental is slotted for release on Disney+. It is being directed by The Good Dinosaur director Peter Sohn. The film follows a world where everyone in her city is a living manifestation of earth, fire, water, and air. A fiery young woman named Ember and her watery friend Wade explore urban life and experience vibrant cultures in this heartfelt and personal story.
New concept art for Elemental was also released, pictured below:
Elemental seems to offer more of the same narrative stylings of recent Pixar offerings, such as Turning Red and Onward, which are directly inspired by the life of the director and inserted in to an highly fantasized world. In a press statement, Sohn addresses this running theme by saying, ““My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx. We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams – all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to Elemental. Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air. Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
The film is set to arrive on June 16, 2023.
