The Barden Bellas are on the on the move. Universal Pictures has announced a change in the release date for the upcoming a capella comedy Pitch Perfect 3.
The third installment of the Pitch franchise has been moved to August 4, 2017, two weeks later than its previously announced July 21 date. It fills the void left by Pacific Rim 2, which has been postponed to an unspecified future date, giving director Guillermo del Toro more time to perfect his effects-laden project.
As of now, Pitch 3 has the August date all to itself, with no wide releases scheduled for that weekend. The move also means the Bellas will not be sharing an opening day with the Untitled Christopher Nolan Movie, the Warner Bros. tentpole; biggest film set to bow on July 21.
Stars Anna Kendrick (Into the Woods) and Rebel Wilson (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) will reprise their roles from the original two films, along with Brittany Snow (Hairspray), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), and Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games films). Banks, who directed Pitch Perfect 2 is attached as a producer. No director, however, for Pitch 3 has been confirmed. Kay Cannon, screenwriter behind the first two installments once again pens the script.
Pitch Perfect was a surprise hit when it was released in 2012, earning $65 million on a $17 million budget. The sequel, which opened this May, wowed the box office, earning a whopping $184 million domestically.
