‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot Setting Sail With ‘Chernobyl’ Creator as Writer

Disney is set to embark on yet another unnecessary remake journey. Despite the most recent entries in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise falling short of expectations, no one can argue the profits this $4.56 billion the series has brought in for Disney. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney wants to hit seas yet again for another Pirates film. Originally led by Johnny Depp as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, his involvement with the future of the franchise seems cloudy at best.

Initially, the script was being written last year by Rhett Reese and Paul Wenick, both of whom wrote Deadpool. Disney then had to pump the brakes as both writers left earlier this year. Now the film is back on track with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to help pen the script. Apart from his HBO hit series, Mazin’s most recent work is the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot which hits theaters next month. Joining him is Ted Elliot, who helped build the Pirates story since it first began back in 2003.

Obviously, the film is early in development, but hopefully in time Mazin and Elliot will build a fresh new take on the beloved franchise. Jerry Bruckheimer will no doubt be producing the film, likely as redemption for the critical failure of Gemini Man, which he also produced.
