Phil Lord and Chris Miller Team Up With Ryan Gosling For ‘Project Hail Mary’ Adaptation

The sky is not the limit for Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s upcoming MGM project, which they’re taking to space.

The Lego Movie duo will direct and produce an astronaut thriller titled Project Hail Maryan adaptation of Andy Weir‘s forthcoming novel of the same name expected to release in spring 2021 from Random House. Weir has earned mass recognition for his debut novel The Martian, which reached fame on the big screen in a 2015 adaptation starring Matt Damon.

It has also been confirmed that Ryan Gosling is attached to star in Project Hail Mary. This wouldn’t be the only time Gosling wass featured in space, having played Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s 2018 biopic First Man. This time, Project Hail Mary is about an astronaut (Gosling) on a spaceship tasked with saving the planet.

This is the latest big acquisition for MGM since it hired veteran Michael De Luca as film chairman in January. Back in March, Project Hail Mary was in exclusive negotiations to be acquired by MGM in a 7-figure deal, $3 million to be precise. The other biggest and most recent acquisition is Gucci, with Lady Gaga set to star and Ridley Scott to direct the biopic. The president of film for Lord and Miller’s production banner, Aditya Sood, will also produce Project Hail Maryalongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producer Amy Pascal.
