Spielberg Offers Advice To Rising Directors Of ‘Obsession’ And ‘Backrooms’

With Disclosure Day finally hitting theaters, Steven Spielberg offered some advice to Kane Parsons and Curry Barker.  The latter, having directed all-time box-office performer Obsession, and the former, making his directorial debut with passion project Backrooms. Having directed Jaws when he was in his 20s, Spielberg took the time in a recent interview to offer some advice to the 26-year-old Barker and the 20-year-old Parsons.  The Hollywood Reporter cited Spielberg, as he stated,

Don’t let success go to your heads… Do not let wild success go to your heads, because when you make your next movie, you’re starting from scratch.

Obsession currently sits with $238.7 million at the global box office, becoming Focus Features’ largest film of all time.  The film, acquired at TIFF, also broke the gross record for a festival acquisition. Made on just a $750,000 budget, the film has been a major hit with both audiences and critics alike.  Backrooms has grossed $200.6 million at the global box office, quickly becoming A24’s highest-grossing film in its North American history.  Spielberg continued on, stating,

It’s always good to have a big hit to shore up your reputation, and you’re going to get a lot of respect from executives, from the film world and from the studios. But the advice I’d give them is something I had to learn the hard way: We all start over again… And if you get the chance to make 20 or 30 films in your career, you will discover, maybe on your second or third film, that you’re beginning your career all over again at the outset of every single project.

Barker has since expressed great delight in the legendary directors’ remarks, saying, “I can’t believe it…”.  Barker’s film Obsession holds 94% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Parsons’ Backrooms holds an 88% critics’ score.

Disclosure Day, Backrooms, and Obsession can all currently be seen in theaters.
