Pedro Pascal is in talks to play Denzel Washington‘s next antagonist in the sequel to The Equalizer, Variety reports. His role and the plot for the film are currently unknown, however, it would be a good guess to say Pascal will be playing the head of a similar nefarious syndicate that Washington’s character went up against in the first film, that being the Russian mob.
This will be Washington’s first time ever reprising a character for a sequel to one of his films. This is a huge deal for Sony Pictures, and the studio has kept quite mum on the project so far, and have also convinced the original film’s director, Antoine Fuqua, to return for the second installment. Fuqua is also very much dedicated to the film and the protection of Washington’s Robert McCall character that he left Universal’s Scarface reboot to focus on this project.
Fuqua’s original Equalizer featured Washington as Robert McCall, a man working at a hardware store whose storied past is revealed when he is forced to protect a young woman who is beaten by her pimps that work for the Russian mob. Based on the theme of being an equalizer, it is likely that the new film will feature Washington protecting the less fortunate once again as an ex-secret agent.
If the deal goes through, Pascal will be adding even more mounting star power to the project. After joining Game of Thrones, Pascal has been building up more and more work, acting in Netflix’s Narcos and soon appearing in Kingsman The Golden Circle.
The Equalizer 2 is poised to hit theaters on September 14, 2018.
