Famous TV detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) has returned for another case in the upcoming dramedy mystery Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. Written by series creator Andy Breckman, Peacock released the film’s trailer on Wednesday, highlighting how the world has changed since his 2009 final bow.
Monk followed the titular detective as he solved multiple murder cases while dealing with the trauma surrounding his wife Trudy’s (Melora Hardin) death and his resulting OCD and phobias. Nearly fourteen years later, Monk is once again called to another case after his stepdaughter Molly (Caitlin McGee) suspects that her fiancé’s death was more likely foul play than an accident. Now, Monk will have to navigate a world affected by the COVID pandemic, making everyone around Monk almost as afraid of germs as he is.
Both Shalhoub and Hardin have reprised their roles from the original series alongside other cast members like Ted Levine (Captain Lelan Stottlemeyer), Hector Elizondo (Dr. Neven Bell), and Trayler Howard (Natalie Teeger).
Breckman described his intentions in exploring the present through a character from his past in a promotional statement. When writing the film, Breckman wanted to tell a story “that was worthy of [the show’s] legacy.” He knew it would be essential to keep the story up to date with today’s societal climate, not just for humor’s sake but also dramatically. Breackman promised the movie would be “a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming and has something to say about the human condition.”
Mr. Monk’s Last Case will be released for streaming on Peacock on December 8th.
