According to IndieWire, Paul Thomas Anderson is working on something a little lighter than his usual dark, eccentric wheelhouse. He is currently working with his eight-year-old daughter, Lucy, to write a family-friendly script that kids of all ages (including his four) can enjoy.
“I’m working right now on a story with my daughter Lucy,” Anderson said. “She’s 8. She has taken it upon herself, realizing that if I wasn’t going to [write a family-friendly script], she would do it with me. We’re trying to hash out something right now. It’s a good collaboration too. It keeps you on your toes.”
This would be the first time in his illustrious career that Anderson has gone for an all-ages approach with a film. Known for dense, niche, impenetrable films, it will be interesting to see what he can cook up (with the help of his daughter).
“I was trying to guide the story to something a little bit darker, where my instincts wanted to take it, and she was politely, very sweetly reminding me I was aiming it that way and brought it back,” he commented. “We had a good run at it and took a break. We’ve got to get back to it.”
Anderson wrote and directed Phantom Thread, which won Best Costume Design at the 90th Academy Awards. He’s also known for Inherent Vice, The Master, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights.
