Paul Feig May Direct Gay Wedding Comedy ‘Groom’

Paul Feig may be looking to direct the upcoming comedy Groom, gay romantic comedy set up at 20th Century Fox. It’s an idea that’s been percolating for a bit but may freshly fit with Feig’s recent comedic output, which includes the Oscar-nominated blockbuster Bridesmaids, the buddy cop film The Heat, last years’ female-spliced James Bond riff Spy and his upcoming all-female Ghostbusters reboot.

In plans come together, Feig will produce the comedy. Brooklyn Nine-Nine scribe Tricia McAlpin, reportedly, wrote the most recent draft of the script based on an original idea from Feig as well as prior draft of the screenplay by Josh Miller and Mark Fortin. The premise of the film is being kept a secret for now but a few years ago Feig opened up that he was tinkering with the idea of gay romantic comedy where an ordinary Joe finds himself out of his reach when he starts hanging out with more attractive guys. He also revealed his dream cast would include Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher) and John Milhiser (SNL).

We may be a long way off before casting or a production start date is confirmed, but we will stay tuned. In the meantime, Feig’s Ghostbusters (starring the quartet of funny-women Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones) will open in theaters on July 15th. Feig is also planning a sequel to his 2013’s hit The Heat as well the comedy Wish List, which may star Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon.
