It’s been nearly five years since the release of the last Paranormal Activity film, The Ghost Dimension. Now, after announcing its development this past June, the untitled seventh film in the series has received a release date of March 19, 2021.
The first Paranormal Activity made waves in 2009 after earning $193.4 million on a budget of just $15,000. Giving hope to amateur filmmakers everywhere, the film was bought and distributed by Paramount, where it currently stands as the most profitable film ever made, based on return on investment. In addition to its commercial success, the film also found critical praise, holding a score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning 3.5/4 stars from Roger Ebert himself.
Following young couple Katie and Micah during a haunted evening in their new San Diego home, the found-footage horror flick immediately garnered comparisons to 1999’s The Blair Witch Project. After independent distribution in 2007 from director Oren Peli, Paramount picked up the film for distribution, complete with an entirely new ending.
Since then, the series has gone on to include five other films: Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015). Following the series’ low budget trend, each was made for under $10 million and have collectively grossed upwards of $900 million.
Paranormal Activity 7 has yet to announce its director or actors. The film will be released on March 21, 2021.
