Paramount Pictures has released the official trailer for Johannes Roberts’ upcoming horror film, Primate, starring Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, and Oscar-winning Troy Kotsur. The story follows a group of friends on a tropical vacation that turns into a fight for survival.
The trailer opens with idyllic shots of a tropical island as Sequoyah’s character introduces a group of friends to her family’s chimpanzee, Ben. “Our mom rescued him, and now he’s part of our family,” she says. The tone soon darkens as the group realizes something is wrong with Ben.
After being bitten, the once-beloved chimpanzee becomes feral. A slow, tension-filled buildup leads to occasion after occasion of Ben terrorizing the friend group. The horror unravels as one of the girls makes a chaotic 911 emergency call from a vehicle, only to find Ben in there with her.
Roberts, known for 47 Meters Down and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, co-wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera. The film also stars Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann, and Tienne Simon.
Produced by Walter Hamada, John Hodges, and Bradley Pilz, Primate marks another project under Hamada’s 18Hz banner. The company recently renewed its production pact with the newly owned Paramount Pictures.
Primate opens in theaters on January 9, 2026. Check out the trailer below.
