Fjord, which one the illustrious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year, opened in theaters domestically this past weekend, putting up solid numbers for its incredibly limited debut.
The film raked in $124,000 in its first 3 days, playing in just four theaters. That means it averaged $31,000 per screen. Fjord now has the record for best debut per-screen average of a Sebastian Stan movie this decade thus far. This places it above films such as Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World and Dumb Money. Neon hold the distribution rights in the United States, so depending on how wide the distreibutor chooses to spread the film, it could earn between $23 and $47 million before it leaves theaters.
Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, and follows a Romanian-Norwegian couple who move to a remote Norwegian town and come under scrutiny by the locals over how they raise their children. The chaos ultimately leads to their children being separated from them. The film became an instant contender for Oscars after winning the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Renate Reinsve has had quite the year so far, as she was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sentimental Value at this year’s Oscars, but also led the box office hit Backrooms this summer. Sebastian Stan has also been nominated for an Oscar, that being Best Actor for The Apprentice 2 years ago. On top of Fjord he is returning as Bucky Barnes in Avengers: Doomsday this December.
